            Pétanque

Very popular in Provence during the 18th century, the game of boules or pétanque is still a favorite pastime in France and has many American fans of the game as well. It can be played on any hard dirt or gravel surface and requires little in the way of equipment. A little wooden ball called the cochonnet is tossed forward as a target and the players take turns throwing their steel boules as close to the cochonnet as possible.

Many U.S. pétanque clubs gather every weekend for friendly games, good food and wine. There is usually a mix of avid French and American players with an equal mix of both languages as players tease and spar over whose boule landed closer to the cochonnet! It's a great way to spend an afternoon!
