| La Tour Eiffel |
![]() |
The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel and completed in 1889 for the World's Fair. Gustave Eiffel originally planned to build the tower in Barcelona but officials there thought it was too expensive and strange. At the time of completion, it was the world's tallest structure at 1,063 feet. The reproduction of the tower in Las Vegas is about half as tall. Gustave Eiffel also designed bridges and designed the armature (internal structure) for the Statue of Liberty. The tower has a world renowned restaurant called the "Jules Verne" which is now run by celebrity chef Alain Ducasse. In 1902, lightning struck the tower causing damage to the top and in 1944 as the Allies neared Paris, Hitler ordered the tower destroyed but the governor of Paris disobeyed the order. In 1985, the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill" was filmed on the tower and in the Jules Verne Restaurant. There have been about 230,000,000 visitors since it was built. For more information or to send a free "email postcard" of the Eiffel Tower to a friend, visit the official site of "La Tour Eiffel" at: http://www.tour-eiffel.fr. The Chunnel has three tunnels, two for the Eurostar train and one service tunnel. The Chunnel is about 31 miles long and is about 150 feet under the seabed. About 9 million passengers per year travel on the Eurostar train. The estimated cost of this project was about $20 billion dollars. |
